Leather skivers are sheep’s leather, and are used by the trade to cover desk tops, writing boxes etc.  They can be tooled with gold and finished with a dark edge roll, or left completely plain.  Because a skiver is a natural material it will vary in thickness across the skin, and from skin to skin.  There may also be scars or blemishes in the surface, although these are not detrimental to the skin.  In fact, they can add a certain character to the piece.

To order, measure up your piece of furniture accurately, checking for squareness and regularity.  If in any doubt, and particularly for curved shapes, please supply a template marked out from the actual piece of furniture.  Send with the face side i.e. upper side clearly marked.  Your leather will be supplied with spare material all round for final fitting and trimming.

There is a limitation to the maximum size of a one piece leather top, approx. 33″ x 24″.  If you require a piece larger than this, it will normally be supplied made up from two or more pieces. The joined is taped on the back side ready for laying.  The joint line is normally disguised with a blind (black) tooling running across the leather and a matching line on the opposite side to balance.

Tooling patterns and colour samples are available upon request.  We strongly recommend that the choice of tooling is left to our professional leather cutter, who uses his skill and experience to attractively decorate the leather, and at the time will disguise and minimalise any imperfections.  Traditionally, leathers were stuck down with a cold water paste, but a watered down PVA glue such as Evostick W Resin glue (4 parts glue to 1 part water) works just as well.
